about

This is the oldest tune in the set, written onboard the first ferry of the year crossing from Santander to Plymouth. The 26-hour crossing was memorable for the emptiness of the ship (very few vehicles and passengers), the slate grey of the swell on which this smaller than usual vessel was rolling, the flurries of snow in the air as we left port, and changing movements of the sea as we ploughed across it. That ferry journey, sandwiched between a day of travel at either end, was also a time of sadness as I travelled alone, leaving behind the one I loved. With this piece, finally I began to rediscover my musical voice after the retreat of the classical diet on which I'd previously tried to live.
